Having withstood 91 years of productions, the Greenville Little Theatre (GLT) is the oldest local theatre. Artist and volunteers dedicate their time and passion to create a colorful array of annual performances; five main stage and two concert series.
Be warned. The GLT is anything but little. For the past 24 years, the 600 seat theatre has been the largest locally-producing theater “...striving to cultivate, inspire, entertain, and educate our community through theatrical experiences of the highest caliber.”
Continuing their reputation for excellence the 2017 season kicks off with the Tony Award winning musical Peter and the Starcatcher. The prequel for the classic Peter Pan, Peter and the Starcatcher takes you on a whimsical adventure. The show is performed by 11 men and 1 lovely Molly who play over a hundred different characters that challenge your imagination. Based on the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, PTS is geared towards an audience of young adults and adults alike.
Allan McCalla, artistic director, has been the successor for GVLT for over 24 years. When asked about what he envisions in the future he states, “We have grown over the past several years in pretty much every way, number of productions, staff, and audience. I love for us to keep growing. Add a second performance space. Attract even more theatrical artist to this area.”
The costume designer, Thomas Brooks, had the fun challenge of utilizing found objects for some of the costumes in the Peter and the Starcatcher.
“We have orange peelers, colanders for hats, mops for wigs, clean new mops not used mops. Plungers, nutcrackers, bottle openers. It is endless. We used a lot of junk jewelry to fill in crowns. The tails are table cloths. We have a pot holder wig and a quilted piece made from seat cushions.”
According to Allan McCalla, “Those who don’t know about our theatre don’t know what you are missing. It is a real gem. We perform more than any producing theatre in South Carolina. And we’re right here in Greenville.”
Peter and the Starcatcher will give the audience a new appreciation for the beloved story of Peter Pan. To experience a part of this gem check out Peter and the Starcatcher running from February 24th to March 12th.
